If the golden era of Australian basketball isn’t already here, it’s about to be.
He may only be a handful of games into his college career, but remember the name of 6’10 Australian Ben Simmons.
Simmons is a 19-year old Louisiana State University freshman being compared to ‘a 10-year NBA veteran’ and why online bookmaker William Hill has already earmarked him as a $1.40 shot to be selected Number One Overall in the 2016 NBA Draft.
“We only opened a market on the NBA Draft last week, but such was the weight of money and interest in backing Simmons that we had to trim him from $1.80, to the $1.40 mark,” William Hill spokesman Tim Ashworth said.
“Australian basketball owes a lot to Andrew Bogut and what he’s done since 2005, but Ben Simmons is about to step it up a notch and become Australia’s next big sporting export.”
Meanwhile, Bogut’s Golden State Warriors are on the verge of creating NBA history when they take on LA Lakers on Wednesday afternoon AEST.
A victory will see them standalone as having the best ever start to a NBA season with 16 wins – 0 losses and edge closer to breaking the Chicago Bulls record of 72 wins in a single regular NBA season.
