The prospect of Germany defeating Brazil 7-1 prior to this morning’s World Cup semi-final seemed so improbable that odds of 500/1 were offered in the correct score market.
Those succulent odds weren’t enough to entice one single punter at Sportingbet.com.au or its UK parent company William Hill to place a bet on that exact scoreline.
“No one could have anticipated such an extraordinary result and it was a total wipe out for correct score punters,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.
William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly added, “Our punters often come up with the craziest bets but not one of them had even a single penny on 7-1 as the correct score. We may well have witnessed the most incredible match of football ever!”
One William Hill punter did correctly predict the 5-0 halftime score, placing 80p on the result at odds of 300/1.
Germany is now a $1.75 favourite at Sportingbet.com.au to win the World Cup with Argentina $3.75 and Holland $4.50.
Most punters believe Germany will meet Argentina in the final, with the South Americans $2.40 favourites to defeat Holland ($3.10) in tomorrow’s second semi-final.
