The motion for a leadership spill may have been defeated, but punters are still convinced that Malcolm Turnbull will be leading the Coalition into the next election.

Mr Turnbull is the $1.60 favourite at to be Prime Minister at the next election. Tony Abbott is at odds of $2.75, while Julie Bishop is $6.50.

“Over the last week, Mr Turnbull has attracted more than 80% of bets to be the next PM, and the result of today’s vote seems to have only increased our punters’ enthusiasm that he will have the top job sooner or later.”

“Our punters are of the opinion that Mr Turnbull has now tested the waters and will come back before the election to finish the job.”

The Coalition is $1.80 at Sportingbet to win the next election, versus $2.00 for Labor.

Punters this morning successfully plunged on today’s spill motion to be defeated, backing the option of there being no leadership spill from $1.90 into $1.44 before Sportingbet suspended its market just prior to 9am. The odds of there being a spill drifted from $1.80 to $2.70 before the market was closed.
