Online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au has priced former Espy regular Paul Kelly as favourite to play the first gig in the restored Esplanade Hotel in St Kilda, following news of its sale to a Hotel Group.
· Paul Kelly $4.00 to christen St Kilda’s iconic Espy
· The Esplanade Hotel expected to open in first half of 2018 according to market
Kelly heads a list of Aussie artists/groups who made the Espy one of Melbourne’s greatest live venues like Jimmy Barnes ($5.00), Midnight Oil ($11) and Hunters and Collectors ($16).
The list is a who’s who of Australian 80’s and 90’s music including Dragon ($21), Rose Tattoo ($26) and the Screaming Jets ($34).
Sportsbet’s market has the first half of 2018 as the opening date for the hotel, which is considered a $2.00 chance.
“The Espy’s new owners are probably looking forward rather than behind them but the punters will be disappointed if one of the joint’s former icons isn’t given the honour of the first gig,” said sportsbet.com.au’s Christian Jantzen.
